Oolaa Custom Smart Glass with External Board

Apr 15, 2024

Not every project can use a standard smart mirror. This special-made Oolaa Smart Mirror was built to a custom construction: instead of packing everything behind one piece of glass, the build is divided into three parts — the mirror assembly itself, and a separate, external motherboard. Watch the video above to see the parts and how they come together.

Part A: mirror surface and touch film

The first part is what the user sees and touches: the mirror — or glass — surface, finished with a touch film. This is the layer that keeps the piece reading as a proper mirror while carrying the touch interface the smart functions depend on. On a custom build, the surface is made to the project's size and finish, because it is the part the whole room will judge.

Part B: LED panel and metal back cover

Behind the surface sits the second part: the LED panel, housed with the metal back cover of the whole smart mirror. The panel provides the display that appears through the glass; the metal back cover gives the assembly its structure and protection. Together they form the mirror unit that mounts in place — glass, touch, and screen in one finished piece.

Part C: the external motherboard

The third part is what makes this build special: the motherboard is not inside the mirror at all. It is an external unit, in its own metal back cover, connected to the smart mirror. The brains of the system therefore live outside the glass assembly, while the mirror itself stays a clean, two-part construction of surface and panel. For projects whose design or installation conditions rule out an all-in-one unit, this split construction is the answer — the same smart mirror experience, engineered in three pieces instead of one.

Dividing the build also changes how the unit is handled. The mirror assembly and the electronics travel, mount, and connect as separate pieces, each in its own protective metal cover, instead of as one large and fragile whole. On a custom project — where the mirror may be oversized, unusually shaped, or fitted into a finished interior — that separation gives the design team options an all-in-one box cannot.

Made to order

Special-made units like this one come out of Oolaa's own factory in Shenzhen. Oolaa (Viewdex Limited) is a Hong Kong company that designs and manufactures its smart mirrors itself — more than 31,000 installations across Hong Kong and Macau — which is how a non-standard construction like a three-part build with an external motherboard gets engineered properly, rather than improvised on site.

Frequently asked questions

What are the three parts of this smart glass?

Part A is the mirror (or glass) surface with touch film. Part B is the LED panel with the metal back cover of the whole smart mirror. Part C is an external motherboard with its own metal back cover.

Why is the motherboard external?

In this special-made design, the motherboard is housed separately from the mirror assembly and connected to it, so the mirror itself is built as a clean two-part unit of surface and LED panel.

Who makes this smart glass?

Oolaa (Viewdex Limited). The unit is special-made in Oolaa's own factory in Shenzhen.
