A smart city is not much use if it stops at the front door. At Chinachem's residential development on Anderson Road, smart-city elements were brought right into the building: every tower's elevator lobby is fitted with a 43-inch Oolaa smart mirror, putting live information and a Cantonese voice-controlled smart system in the space residents pass through every day.

A smart mirror in every lobby

The elevator lobby is the one part of a home that every resident uses, twice a day at least. Chinachem's project made that space work harder. The 43-inch Oolaa smart mirrors provide real-time information where residents actually are — at the lifts, on the way out, on the way home — instead of on a notice board nobody reads or an app nobody opens. And because the mirrors are in every tower's lobby, the experience is the same for every household in the development.

Information and control, in Cantonese

The mirrors do more than display. Residents can use Cantonese voice to control the smart system by voice — speaking their mother tongue, with no menus to learn and no language barrier to cross. Think about what real-time information means at the lifts: the weather and rain warning before you leave, the time at a glance, building notices delivered on a screen residents actually pass — replacing paper on a board. That matters in a lobby: hands full of groceries, a child in tow, an elderly parent who has never been comfortable with touchscreens. Oolaa's smart mirrors run voice through Google Assistant with Cantonese support, so a spoken request is simply understood. Life gets simpler and faster when the building answers in the language its residents think in.

A small piece of the smart city

The development's smart home system is designed to make smart-city living simple and genuinely easy to use, so residents enjoy a more convenient life without a learning curve. The lobby mirrors are the public face of that system: a daily demonstration that the building is connected, current, and working for the people who live in it.

For Oolaa, the project is one of more than 31,000 installations across Hong Kong and Macau — and a reminder that a smart mirror's best location is not always the bathroom. Anywhere people pause, look, and need information is a place a mirror can quietly do a job.
